The BP Project
Well, it had to happen didn't it? Some clever bod (you KNOW who
you are) decided to run the mountain climbing element of the Columbus
Challenge event again but for western businesses operating in
Azerbaijan. He invited me and some of the rest of the HSBC Az team
to come along to help run the event. Fair enough - seems
reasonable. However, he also asked the Keswick and Lochaber mountain rescue teams to come
to
'ensure the safety of all participants on the hill'. Now, these
two teams are two of the best MR teams in the world - probably wise to
bring them along since one of the people to be on the hill was the British Ambassador.
But
what about the safety, health and general well being of the rest of the
team? These men are not like your average, ordinary human beings
... they are quite different.
If you don't know who I'm talking about then you have been spared and
you should just move on, untouched, and safe with your sanity.
However, if you DO know who I'm on about, then you will have probably
had your definition of 'work hard, play hard' extended somewhat at the
edges. The pics barely illustrate what I mean. Suffice it to
say, we escorted eight teams up Babadag - all made it successfully (the only casualty was one young lady who came down
on a donkey with a sprained ankle) and then there was the party ...

The pics speak for themselves. I
have no further words. Whatever you see, whatever you imagine,
multiply by 100 and you might get close to the chaos and mayhem caused
by these people (I could mention that the locals thought at one point
our dancing to "We Will Rock You" was the beginning of a mass
fight, that one team member proved that every part of his body
could swing to the rhythm and that our hotel rooms in some cases were
only used to store clothes with the intended occupants preferring
corridors, doorways and the bar ... but I won't). Of course, I was no-where near
... merely keeping a
safe distance recording events for posterity ... hmmm.
The last pic
is 'the powers that be' negotiating down our US$2,000 bar bill wearing
his 'does this look the face of a man who cares?' expression. We
did raise loads of money for CAD, even though we had a fine time ..... J
