Background
In 1998, I lead a project for employees at HSBC
Asset Finance (UK) Ltd (HAF), in association
with the charity Children’s Aid Direct
(formerly Save the Children), to create a computer centre and English
language school in Azerbaijan for
use by young people disenfranchised by war. The project, supported at the
most senior management levels, was taken on as part of a culture change
programme within HAF. It came about in response to a challenge to the
company from the culture change consultants to:
- raise £100,000 in 100 days;
- deliver the funds travelling 4,500 miles round trip outside the UK,
in 76 hours;
- get on TV;
- all on a budget of £45!
